Some Useful Information

1) The nearest supermarket – which is open 8.00am until 12.00pm, is very close. Exit the complex at the front gates and turn left. You can see a couple of “Elba Hotels”, Castillo San Jorges and Castillo Antigua. As you approach them turn right following the road. The supermarket is within the hotel structure, and well sign posted. It should take no more than 3 or 4 minutes walk from our house. There is a cashpoint further along the road.

From our experience - this supermarket is slightly expensive, so we’d advise that you purchase literally the bare minimum, and use the Hipperdino or Hipperdino Express supermarkets.

2) Water. We buy water to drink – but use tap water in the kettle for a coffee or tea.

The “Water Man” visits Amuley Mar every Wednesday morning at around 10.00. He sells the large vessels of water. It’s cheaper than most shops – and …it’s delivered to your doorstep. At last visit 10 litres were €2.10

3) I know it’s old hat….but the sun here is very strong. Don’t be fooled by the breeze, and make sure you apply plenty of sun tan lotion.

4) Books. Please help yourself to the books in the cupboard…if you haven’t finished it…take it home. Feel free to leave a book you’ve finished.

5) Games. Similarly – feel free to use the games Chess, Monopoly or cards

6) Children items. Whilst we have a travel cot for free use – it is easy enough to rent high chairs, push chairs or other items you may need – just ask Karen or Steve.

7) TV. The satellite subscription picks plenty of channels to choose from.

In addition there are a number of DVDs and CDs in the folder under the DVD player. (also listed on the laminate)

8) Sony PS2 – Also available for your use, with games listed on the laminate

9) Local Maps. Help yourself to the brochures / maps in the box in the drawer under the TV. If there are no maps there – just pop into the lobby of any of the hotels

10) The Sun Beds and the parasol are our private property, so we would ask please that at the end of your stay, they are returned to our terrace.

The pool area is cleaned in the midweek evenings and you may be asked to move them at the end of each day

11) Car rental. If you haven’t rented a car at the airport – there are several car hire companies in the town. We have found Cicar cars to be reliable

12) Fishing Nets. If you want to try catching fish in the nets…..don’t forget some bread. Otherwise – you’ll have no chance. Feel free to use any of the other toys downstairs

13) Taxis / Buses. Although it’s easy enough to get around on foot, taxis are very cheap, and there is also a free bus service which runs between the town, the golf club and the Commercial centre. What’s more there’s a bus stop very close to Amuley Mar. it picks up at Castillo San Jorge Hotel 9.45 am to 12.45 pm and 3.45pm through until 8.45 pm. There is a full timetable in the hotel reception.

14) Airport Transfer. It is illegal to offer an airport transfer without insurance – so we longer offer this service. The simplest way to get a taxi is to walk into the reception of Castillo San Jorge Hotel and ask them to phone for one. Wait there and direct it to Amuley Mar.

15) Cash Machines. There are a number all over Caleta. The nearest are close to the supermarket referred to above

16) Internet. If you would like short term broadband internet access, there are a couple of options.

17) Golf Clubs. We have two sets which are available for your use subject to a small security deposit. Just ask Karen and Steve.

Restaurants and Bars / Entertainment….and some take away suggestions

Fado Rock – Steak house in the main street,….always our first choice. Good all round food, Steak on the stone or chateaubriand again are great. If you would like something a little different the Ostrich is said to be good! It’s easy to find, being on the main street. It’s the only restaurant which sometimes has a queue. If not – you’ll see Batman and Miss Piggy outside

El Camarote – Our second favourite. Based just off the coastal walkway in the harbour. A really beautiful setting, excellent food and regular fish barbeques. (The Creperie next door is also the best place for a lunchtime snack if you’re on the beach)

(El Camarote is just to the right of the old lighthouse)

La Guanxia – fantastic restaurant in El Mattoral, a small village about 3 miles away in the direction of the airport. This is a traditional Spanish restaurant with a fabulous décor where the steaks are cooked on a huge open griddle. (Closed Mondays). Caters more for locals – so good value

Slow Boat – above the shop on the main street, near the trampolines. Great Chinese, the set menus are fantastic value for money. You can get a reasonable meal for two for €20. We think this is the best of three or four Chinese restaurants in the town.

Bodegita – Italian in the square in the Commercial centre, great Italian food and the veal is a must!

The Barceló Hotel – The restaurant allows non residents to eat in the restaurant. The menu is always varied, and laid out in a buffet format, you can return to help yourself as often as you like for the starters, main course or sweets. There is also a free bottle of House wine included per couple with your meal. The cost is 18 Euros for the lot!!

****** Open to non residents the Barcelo runs children’s entertainment from 8.00pm till about 8.45pm. At about 9.30pm / 10.00pm each evening there is good quality evening entertainment (Still suitable for young ones). Timings change according to season.

At our last visit, we saw:
  • A Beatles tribute band got two standing ovations.
  • A really good Lion King show
  • A Starlight Express night
  • A Grease “Extravaganza”
Legends Larder – above the shops in the main street, traditional English food, in case you are missing home a little, Ray who owns the place is famous for his home made steak and kidney pies. You can also get a great Sunday lunch there.

Pierro’s Bar – Down the “dip” in the town centre. It may not be everybody’s “cup of tea” – but it has some great entertainment. We’ve seen an excellent Frank Sinatra, and hypnotist, but the best fun is “Play your Cards right”. Well worth a visit.

El Capitan’s bar – this can be found opposite the Barceló Hotel the next road over from the main street, cheapest bar in the town and they do a happy hour from 8.30 – 10.30 where you get 2 drinks for the price of one!

El Patio – We found really good food. It’s next door to Fado Rock, so we think they try quite hard.

Gepetos – Italian in San Jorge complex. Very handy, especially if you wanted to take a pizza back.

O-Fado / Portugese Fado – Pretty much opposite Fado Rock. Also well worth a visit, We recommend their Chicken Piri Piri (Ask for off the bone)

Topo Gigios – In El Mattoral, so a short taxi journey, but well worth it. Again caters for local residents so is great value – also great food. Probably best of the Italian restaurants

Football.....if you want to keep up with UK Premier Division matches, The Penalty Spot would be best choice. Big TVs – well positioned and they cover most games. Located next to El Camarote.

There are a number of others we like Tony Romas ( not very Canarian in style – but brilliant “Ribs”), Tommy Nutters – which is just very very good value, and Mexican Corner which does brilliant value “specials”
